Kayak Africa recently hosted the first of many school visits by local school children to Mumbo Island. This is a new initiative between National Parks and Kayak Africa, with the intention of showing every child in Chembe Village the importance of conservation in the Lake Malawi National Park and how this can benefit them directly.

Twenty-four students and six teachers from Cape Maclear Community Day Secondary School took the boat out to Mumbo and were briefed by Edward Stefano, our Head Guide and Mrs Kamwaza from the park, who spoke on the environmentally sensitive waste management of the island and the conservation issues of over-fishing and deforestation. Our Manager, Joseph Kamanje, spoke to the group about the importance if ecotourism in their area and how this could benefit their community.

The students were treated to a delicious lunch on the island and expressed their delight in the visit, saying they found Mumbo to be “the best place they’d ever visited and Malawi’s hidden treasure!”
